When we launched the Atelier, Garance and I shared our story of how we came to be, as partners and as bosses in this new company. It’s been an incredible experience, but I didn’t go to business school and sometimes, I need help!
Yep, as much as I wish I did, I don’t know everything, and I especially don’t know everything when it comes to managing a team (hey guys!), and there’s definitely been a steep learning curve considering we doubled the size of our staff in less than one year. I never want to be a shitty boss, and I’ve become aware of the fact that sometimes I’m just too nice and not giving great feedback in fear of hurting feelings. After sharing my managing woes with our friends at SYPartners they suggested Kim Scott’s book, Radical Candor. Admittedly, I haven’t actually read the book yet, but I am many episodes deep into the Radical Candor podcast which I LOVE. It’s a great resource for getting advice on everything from how to give feedback and praise, to how to have constructive career conversations with your staff, to what your body language says in the work place. The podcast is short, most episodes are under 20 minutes, and at the end of each episode Kim and Russ (I feel like they’re my pals now), share a checklist of actionable tips for how to implement their advice. For me it’s been a great management boot-camp tool that’s offered excellent advice. I would highly recommend it for everyone, both bosses and employees, because it teaches great fundamental values of the workplace like caring personally and challenging directly (listen to episode 1 to understand what that means!)
