Montauk Mornings

3 months ago by

In Partnership with Nespresso

For me, and well, most people I know, mornings are a sacred time. It’s the one place in my life where I’ve been able to establish routines without really having to try. I have a routine for the weekday mornings, weekend mornings, and mornings while I’m on vacation – they’re all slightly different, influenced by whichever environment I’m in, but they all involve coffee.

We partnered with Nespresso while we were out East to discover the morning routines and rituals of a few inspiring women, all with strong ties to Montauk. We visited Cynthia Rowley at her Montauk home, Heather Andersen of New York Pilates who opened her Montauk studio for the second summer, and surfer Quincy Davis who spends her summers in a cottage on the water (safe to say she spends more of her time in the water than in that adorable cottage). The one thing they all have in common is their morning coffee. Large or small (Nespresso’s VertuoPlus machine brews a variety of coffees and espresso), with milk or without, it’s basically a morning non-negotiable.

Cynthia Rowley, Designer

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Since we’re in Montauk, I roll out of bed and go check the waves.

What are your morning rituals when you’re out East?
Make a cup of coffee and walk down the dirt path to the beach. Shoes are never part of the equation, and a t-shirt and swimsuit is my usual.

What’s a non-negotiable part of your morning? What do you absolutely need to do to get out the door?
My life in Montauk is so simple. Aside from a big dose of sunscreen, the only thing I need is a few surf buddies, Bill, Kit, Gigi and/or my neighborhood squad.

In addition to your Nespresso, what do you typically have for breakfast?
I like a protein blast in the am – an egg, avocado, or acai, salmon sometimes…….I try to eat a LOT so I can last into the afternoon if things are hectic.

What’s your favorite part of your morning?
Waking up and seeing the sun glistening on the ocean.

How do you take your Nespresso?
Usually hot! Or I like espresso over ice with a hint of milk.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I kiss my husband :) – then I make coffee.

What are your morning rituals when you’re out East?
I keep my morning routine simple, especially on mornings I teach Pilates early. I wash my face & moisturize, plan Pilates classes and an outfit for the day (very important!) over coffee then zip out the door!

What’s a non-negotiable part of your morning? What do you absolutely need to do to get out the door?
Coffee is absolutely non-negotiable. I also like to leave the house in a proper outfit, or at least carrying one with me! When you run a business, you gotta get dressed.

What do you typically have for breakfast, along with your Nespresso?
I often start the day with just coffee, then have an early lunch of salmon and greens. Or I’ll make eggs on a bed of greens at home if I have more time!

What’s your favorite part of your morning?
Honestly, I’m not a morning person, but when I start teaching Pilates or sit down with my New York Pilates team I’m so happy and energized. I also love the mornings I commute to the office via bicycle.

How do you take your Nespresso?
I take it with half & half and treat it like a meal. Recently I’ve been experimenting with butter coffee!

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Probably brush my teeth and rinse my face. Or actually, check my phone. I look to check the time and get sucked into the Instagram or texts, it happens easily.

What are your morning rituals when you’re out East?
In the summer I live at these cottages right on the water on the bay side and there’s a little deck out there where I’ll have my coffee. Usually my mornings are based on the waves so I’ll go and check on the waves. I’ll surf if the waves are fun and if I’m not surfing, I’ll do some sort of work out.

What’s a non-negotiable part of your morning? What do you absolutely need to do to get out the door?
Espresso! It gets me going. I love my Nespresso machine – it makes such a smooth, creamy coffee. With a little coconut milk it’s heaven – perfect way to start my morning pre surf.

In addition to your Nespresso, what do you typically have for breakfast?
I usually make avocado toast or banana and peanut butter pre workout! Post workout I will grab a smoothie.

How do you take your Nespresso?
Sometimes with almond or coconut milk, sometimes with honey.

Nespresso’s VertuoPlus brews both large-cup coffee (in 8oz and 14oz sizes) and espresso, all sourced from the world’s best coffee-producing regions. Nespresso has also introduced the new Vertuo coffee, Alto – the largest cup size in the range at 14oz – which can also be enjoyed on-the-go in the Vertuo Travel Coffee Mug. Each cup is topped with silky crema – a sign of world class, high quality coffee. Nespresso is committed to making recycling as easy as possible and all Nespresso coffees are packaged in aluminum, which preserves the quality and freshness of coffee and can be recycled over and over again. Thank you Nespresso for joining us out East!
